8/15/12 Radiation Consuption and diet ........pr

When people are on radiation for a continual thirty day period of time it can feel like you are on a non-stop treadmill and you cannot get off.  It becomes as automatic as brushing your teeth.  You are consumed with planning your day around the radiation appointment, knowing you can get a call from the radiation department to say "can you please change your appointment time tomorrow?"  You do!
It is almost like being pregnant!  How?  You are more careful with your eating.  Here goes!: For Vegetarian's Keep A Food Diary to include: Six Servings of Grains/day/ Five servings of legumes, nuts, and other protein-rich foods/day; Four servings of vegetables/day/Two servings of fruit/day/ Two servings of fat/day/Eight servings of calcium-rich food/day/Three servings of vitamin B12-rich foods/day/Two servings of omega-3fatty acids/day.  This is adapted from: Messina V. Melina V. Mangels A. A new food guide for North American vegetarians. J Am Diet Assoc. 2003:103:771-775. This is also all via my Oncologist Registered Dietitian: Stacey Scrabis, RD,LD/N
THE USE OF NUT BUTTERS! Use peanut, almond, and cashew butters to add a touch of sweetness, "staying power," and nutrition to oatmeal, stir-fries, smoothies, ect. Also remember when people would say, "He is NUTS!"  Now I am sure that is a compliment!  Start carrying a small bag of nuts in your purse..or in your car and grab some.  This is a good source of calcium and protein.  This will stop your hunger as you roll into McMoo's!  Remember! If you are overweight or UNDERWEIGHT, time to see your Doctor and get some help!Hugs, phyllis 05/06/1933  www.women70andover.com
