12/31/12 Remembering Nora Ephron 1941-2012 pr

When Harry Met Sally is my favorite film.  In fact, we just saw it again on our cruise.  For me, it was just like the first time.  Before things look bleak, I will see it again.  It lifts the webs of romance from the corners of  my heart.  I have felt many of the feelings of this film in my lifetime.  For this I say thank-you to the spirit of Nora Ephron, the great real creative writer of films and essays.

Nora Ephron, 1941-2012.  She died of cancer, just very recently.  She left many gifts of films of comedy, reality and real life glued together in films we all are able to see over and over.  How bout the list of 12!  Here goes:

Silkwood 1983  Heartburn 1986  When Harry Met Sally 1989  My Blue Heaven  1990  This Is My Life 1992  Sleepless In Seattle  1993 Mixed Nuts 1994  Michael  1996  You've Got Mail  1998  Hanging Up  2000  (done with sister Delia Ephron, who wrote the book)  Bewitched  2005 and Julia & Julia  2006.

What riches we all have because of this sharp, witty, deep woman.  She gave us lines we wish we could remember!  She dealt with husbands, who did her wrong.  She loved fully. She was a great cook.  She did what her Mama told her!  She has two great son's and a husband who continues to miss and love her.

Me too!  Nora, you did it all with grace and style.  Hand me a klenix I am still crying for the loss you left within me. Hugs, phyllis 05/06/1933   phyllisreh@aol.com  www.women70andover.com

Read it all dear sis, and continue to cheer you on. I like the team player aspect. This is good, the part of a team. I don't feel the team spirit at all with my CA doctor, more a CD disk to call and evaluate, certainly not a woman, so what you have is vital. 12/28/12 Changes and More Changes! pr

The older we get the more repositioning we feel ourselves doing.  What do I mean by that?  What ever your illnesses are, we are all trying to find a comfort zone.  They make car bumper sticker's about this-------happens!  It does!  Reminders that leg cramps get more prevalent.   You can feel like the tin man after taking a small car outing.  We become out of line with our bodies.

If I would not go to a physical therapist I might be crawling on the floor, instead of walking.  She is able to identify why I have a pain in my leg or lower back and what to do about it.  This really works!  Roll towels placed under the back.  Leg yoga blocks that you can put on one leg and do exercises that help your leg strength  within minutes.  You would take your car in for a check-up when it gets sluggish.  You are more valuable than your car.  Work with it baby, as the song says!  Try it!  Feel good! 12/27/12 The Way It Was! pr

When we are reminded of  the passing of time, it gives you a jolt!  It did me today!  We were having lunch and I glanced up at two young boys, perhaps eight and ten years old.  They were having the most fun getting a gum ball our of a machine that whirled the gum ball down to them quickly.  There was not another care or joy in the world except their colorful new piece of gum!  What fun!

On the other hand I wonder how in the world did I get in this position of dealing with the side effects of Ameridex.? In reality I know how I got here....sometimes!  The hot flashes, the leg pains when I go to sleep.  The dryness of the mouth that causes stones in the Salivary glands.  The dryness of this medicine that causes dry eyes and the many more other things that happen to the body so my body can fight off any invading tumors.  I will start to be part of a research group that is doing a study of this medicine,  that helps people fight off the effects of Cancer.  There is hope my efforts may help just one person.  That would be great!  Just like getting a colored gum ball everyday, with no other care in the world.  That is the way to start the new year off! 12/8/12. Jane Murray Heimlich. pr

Jane Murray Heimlich  was a women our times.  She was a mover and a shaker.  A writer of homeopathic medicines.  Jane had radio shows.  She wrote books.  Jane rose above her background of famous parents, Kathryn and Arthur Murray the original "Dancing With The Stars" were the first to have their one hour dancing show and dance  studios all over the United States.  Her husband was Dr. Henry Heimlich of the Heimlich Maneuver.  Jane also had a twin, her best friend,  still living.  With all this background and more, she strived to be her own person.

Jane was my best friend.  We would sit for hours and talk and share.  We would have lunch of wonderful soups and veggies.  Jane's last book OUT OF STEP is a good read.  I am doing a re-read of it  now.  I hate for it to end!  Hugs,Phyllis 05/06/1933 www.women70andover.com

12/7/12 December 7, 1941 pr

One never forgets Pearl Harbor..I was in a movie.  I was 8 years old..When I got out of the movie, everyone was shouting war! war!  When I got home from the movie war was the talk of everyone.  The war seemed to go on forever, with horrible news reels when you went to the movies and on the radio.  President FDR would give fireside talks, we would all huddle near the radio.  Looking back I was so young, but I could understand some of the horrors of it all.  My brothers were twenty years older than me.  They got drafted in the military.  It was so sad when they left for the war, for years.  Letters would come.  We would all cry and read them and reread them.  They were called VMAILS and were small and photocopied.  They were censored.  Words would be struck out.  We would have victory gardens and grew vegetables.  We collected newspapers and tin foil from cigarette wrappers for the war cause.  Everyone cared and did something for the war effort.  All Americans stuck together.  There were signs telling us not to repeat anything as the enemy was listening.  We have come along way baby!  Now is the time to watch your health.  Check your breasts and your heart.  McDonalds! Wendy's coffee! Hugs, phyllis 05/06/1933    www.women70andover.com...we leave on a cruise Dec. 8 till Dec. 14...will write on Dec. 15, if I have it pulled together...

12/4/12 Make Over? HUH? pr

Left the Humane Shelter.  Just missed two King Charles Spaniels over the weekend.  There is hope in finding a fur friend.  From there we went to Dillards.  The last straw was in my purse, a new lipstick that could pass one gulp of water without coming off.  You might be asking how does this equate to breast cancer and losing a dog?  Actually it all fits in like the last pieces of a large puzzle.  We need a best friend animal by our sides and we need lipstick that will stay on.  Most of all females like to feel beautiful.  It does not matter if you are or you are not.  Just feeling that way makes it happen.  It cannot happen without the Lancome Lady at Dillards or your favorite upgraded place to shop.  Wall Mart did not do it for my lips!  Ah ! Ha!  The make-up lady spent an hour with my face.  I went along for the ride.  True she made my lips not feel dry and crackly.  Instead they feel part of a Monet painting!  Not my whole face!  The radiation takes every drop of moisture out of your body..End results of my efforts:  there is hope we will find a dog/I feel more famine, after my visit to the beauty bar after my mastectomy and all is well with the world, just for this moment!Hugs, phyllis  05/06/1933   www.women70andover.com

12/3/12 Time Waiting For You? pr

Time?  This is a four letter word we should not think of?  Is it the end of the year that makes me think that way?  This subject is hard to unravel.  Today I found myself talking with a young lady of twenty-two and she told me she had hopes of moving to California.  I told her to rush there and not blink an eye.  I told this young dear girl, before she would know it, she would soon be eighty like me!  Really now, how in the world could I ever get this thought over to someone who cannot think of the fast storms of time?  Perhaps she has never seen a storm of time.  Then I got to thinking, I must have heard someone saying a similar thing when I was twenty-two and wondering if I could get my baby girl to fall asleep in the middle of the night.  Who knows? 12/2/12 Women/Men Sit Too Much? pr

Women and men who exercises daily continue to be at risk of chronic health conditions.  I have walked four miles a day most of my life.  So what you can now say!  We all need to focus on what we do with the rest of the day!  How much time do you spend in the car?  Then there is T.V. and reading.  Not to mention texting!
Do you sit more than you sleep?  From a new study it looks like we all sit more than we sleep. We all budget our monies, more important than that we need to write down a "what do I do? Diary for a week".  Check your personal sit schedule.  Something to think about.  It is a pretty day! Hey! I am out of here! 11/30/12 More to Learn! pr

Just when you thought you had life pulled together changes hit us in the face.  We are going through the journey of perhaps getting another dog.  This is helping the healing process.  It surely is a learning experience!  Are we having fun!  We are trying!  Over hill and dale to Humane shelters, looking at dogs.  Gee, it is surprising to see these dogs are in such good condition.  So far they are all too large.  We are used to 16 pounds of soft fur!  Our Cavalier King Charles had such a sweet disposition we have decided perhaps we can find a rescue Cavalier King Charles.  That is where we are today!  All subject to more changes and adjustments! Sounds like real life! Hugs, phyllis 05/06/1933    www.women70andover.com

11/29/12 LOSS pr

Loss leaves you limp.  Hard to grasp reality.  Hard to let go!  This happened yesterday when Bill me, and our dog Annie had to make the hard decision of putting Annie, our King Charles Spaniel down.  Her neck disc’s and spine were giving out.  This meant her walking was impaired and she was well on her way to becoming paralyzed.  Surgery would not help.  Pain medicine was temporary.  There was no way, but to put her down.  I put her on my pillow in bed and kissed her and snuged with her close to me.  Since she had heard my words daily, “I love you little tiny little girl she felt comfort.  I felt her near and I felt comfort.  Bill was with me every step of the way.  The vet was kind to us all. We left her at the vet.  They asked if I wanted her footprint and I said I have her footprint deep on my heart.  We will soon get her ashes. Hug,phyllis 05/06/1933    www.women70andover.com

It is LATTER THAN YOU THINK! pr

11.26.12
We all think we have time to do alot of stuff!  I have heard this from people of all ages!  What do I mean by that?  I will tell you!  Just this evening I was speaking to one of my new friends that is just 50 years old.  You could say that is very young!  I would say that from my up and coming age of 80 in May of 2013.  She told me she was just in the hospital with a lung that was filled with fluid and had to have it cleared up.  She also told me her husband is 70 years old.  I told her....."My Dear!  It is never too early to get your life in order!"  What I meant by that as I asked her if she had any one else on her bank accounts in case she would need that person to come into play in her life if something happened to her or her husband.  She said she did not.  I encouraged her to do that as soon as possible.  I then told her Bill and I have all of our plans in order.  This got her thinking about her now position in life.  When we closed the conversation, it seems I had opened a new door in her life.  We all need to talk this out with someone.  It could be someone we do not even know, perhaps this person is someone you could talk life through, even if you do not know them well.  We all have a good sense of communication skills and we know when we can trust someone.  This may be someone in a bank you speak with almost on a daily basis.  Most banks have a "salt of the earth" person that will not take your personal info out on the circuit. Perhaps this will get you started in thinking about your basic important needs that must be tended to sooner, rather than later. Hugs, phyllis 05/06/1933  www.women70andover.com

Getting Ready! pr

11/24/12
My fitness program never really comes to a halt. If you have a room with a basic sturdy chair you can easilydo leg lifts and arm lifts daily.  One good physical therapist said to me, "You do not need weights!"  He then went on to say, "Think about how heavy each of your legs are and your arms, they are your built in weights!" Duh!  The obvious is always right in front of us, or attached to us!  I will have another breast mastectomy the second week in January.  The more exercises I put in my fitness bank the more I will reap in my recuperation.  This breast does not have cancer, so far.  It is a safety precaution as well as the fact I will feel better in my clothes without this one "head light".

After my last breast mastectomy, July 11, 2012 I was walking that day in the hospital.  Got out the second day/ and walked on the beach with my daughter the third day.  I also did my Utube singing episode song "You Can't Take That Away From Me" on the third day.  I am hoping to do a repeat with this surgery that will be here soon. I have a good cheering second, each one of you! Hugs, phyllis 05/06/1933 www.women70andover.com

Home James! pr

Always good to return home, after a good few days out!  Lucky to have fun and good weather and a good birthday celebration!  Now reality sets in.

I invite you to get on  www.mayoclinic.com .  What for you might be asking!  For starters to learn to take care of muscles you might have missed.  For women they are the muscles that control the urinary part of your body.  There is also alot of information for men on this subject.  For women they have a good write up on The Top 10 Most Common Kegel Excercise Mistakes Women Make.  I will give you a clue you might already know.  Doing these exercises in the car is a good time to do them, for women, NOT MEN!  The best part if you have someone in the car with you, they will NEVER! know you are doing these exercises. It takes at least 8-10 weeks before you notice a significant improvement.  The best thing you can do is keep exercising.

For men, always have your bladder checked and your prostrate levels.  In men, incontinence is often related to prostate problems..  Men can also try pelvic-floor exercises like Kegels also.  For a man, if your bladder squeezes at the wrong time, or if it squeezes too hard, urine may leak out.

As we age, this is a problem even best friends do not share!  I am putting it right out there, as with EVERYTHING,  in life, we all say, "What's Next"?  Do your Kegel excercises! Hugs, phyllis 05/06/1933   www.women70andover.com   You will love Mayo Clinic's website, give it a try!

Life Cannot Be Better! pr

What a Thanksgiving this is, coupled with celebrating Bill's birthday, what else is there?  This is one of the finest hotels and the most beautiful, called the Casa Moderna. Miami.  It is located just across the street from the cruise port, just next to Bayside Shopping outdoor center..Lot's of fresh fruit available..Great breakfast of oatmeal and golden raisins and brown sugar and milk.  Of course, it is served so lovely..in a bowl with a top on it and the brown sugar and raisins in a special tiny dish in the side.  Bill had. Eggs Benedict.  After breakfast, we drove to our favorite places, Key Biscayne and Coral Gables...Lovely homes on the water.  Lots of outdoor cares.  The whole world is eating today..remember ...Feast and Famine.  Tomorrow the latter, when we return home!Hugs, Phyllis 05/06/1933
